As I'm clearing my flat ahead of moving I'm adding a lot of my books to the Bookcrossing pile. This is one of them. Hope I get chance to read it before I have to move!

"Marian is determinedly ordinary, waiting to get married. She likes her work, her broody flat-mate and her sober fiance Peter. All goes well at first, but Marian has reckoned without an inner self that calmly sabotages her careful plans, stable routine -and her digestion."

I enjoyed this book but I did find it a bit dated. In some ways Marian's life and thoughts were very familiar, almost spookily like my own. However, the male characters were all selfish and obnoxious (especially the awful Peter) and there were some very old-fashioned, almost Victorian attitudes that I found incongruous alongside Marian's modern life. I mean, being expected to resign from your job because you get married?! Surely that's illegal now. And the otherwise progressive Ainsley terrified that her child might grow up to be a homosexual? Surely things weren't so backward in 1969, or have we progressed more in the past 40 years than I thought?

Still, Atwood's clear style and sharp wit made it an enjoyable read and the ending was both funny and satisfying.

This is a good read from Ms Atwood - as you would expect. Quite dated (due to when it was written), but obviously risky to have been written at that time in some of its subject matter. I hope you get to read it some time!
