Chapter 1
By Clare Ostler

Excell Eagle and his friend, shown on cbostler's bookshelf page, have been in charge of the books in the Oakcrest Eagles' Nest for almost two years. Now Excell has a new responsibility. He is the mascot for a traveling bookbag. This bag is filled with a terrific selection of pass-along books from Paul Gordon Ostler's Literacy Memorial.
The second graders in my class will be the first to participate in Excell Eagle's project for Paul.

Chapter 4
By Mrs. Ostler

April 3rd was full of fun for Excell Eagle. He was invited to join the class for a pirate party.

The morning began with Breakfast and Books. Excell Eagle loved the yummy juice and donuts, and listening to the children read Paul's Pass-Along books with their families was a treat.
(insert darling family photos here)

During the school day, Excell participated in reading, writing, and math activities that were pirate-oriented. He learned a sea chantey, made a treasure map, and watched a pirate movie.

At lunch, he hoisted his minnikin and gave a rousing "yo ho ho" to life as a pirate.
(more photos here)

All of the books in the Excell Eagle bookbag were read and enjoyed.

Amanda's journal entry for the Excell Eagle bookbag

Excell was a little shy when he got to my house. He was so shy that he hid in the bag, but after I snuggled him, he didn't act so shy. Excell had his own little bed that I made him, but he got lonely so he flew to my bed and slept with me.

The next morning I had to go to school so I left him on the table. When I got home, he was sitting in front of Sundance's kennel and Sundance was so excited to see me that he barked. The barking scared Excell into flying on top of the dog kennel.

When I read the books to Excell, he liked Grandpa's Teeth best because Grandpa kept his teeth in a glass of water.

I think reading Excell's books is the best project in the whole world!!
