Not up to the standard of 'Postcards' or 'The Shipping News' in my view. I found it rather disjointed and with too many characters to keep track of. Good in parts though.

Just popping in to say that I will start reading this book later today. I don't think I will get through it quickly, because it isn't the "main" book that I'm reading right now and it has quite a lot of pages. But who knows?! I guess it depends on if it draws me into it or not!

Journal Entry 8 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Friday, March 4, 2011
I have been reading this book for almost a week now and I'm only on page 135! I'm finding it quite hard going, and that's why I'm not very far into it. It hasn't yet drawn me in.
I found the first part about the Accordian Maker quite good, but very sad. The second story was not all that interesting to me, and I'm now about 8 pages into the third story. Like ardachy said, I am also finding it very disjointed. I would like to give up on this and go to another book that I would find more interesting, but I won't give up just yet. I might just have a break from it and come back to it. I haven't decided yet. I hate being defeated by a book. I'm sure there's something good in there somewhere, and I just haven't got to it yet. Pity. However, I think I will persevere with it. Watch this space for the next instalment!

I made a big effort today to sit and read this book. I have now read 250 pages, but I'm afraid it just isn't doing anything for me. I have made the disappointing decision to stop reading it altogether. I'm sure it's just me, and that someone else will love it. It's just not my cup of tea. I read "The Shipping News" by the same author and I found it much better than this one. I feel disappointed that I am giving in, but I have lots of books waiting to be read here, and I might as well be reading something that takes my interest and gives me enjoyment. I think I will save this book until I can get back to the UK, in the summer, and then I will release it there. This will be the best place to find a new reader for it.
