I'm starting this book as a bookring...My very first bookring:) I loved this book so much that I can't wait to share it with others! I'm looking forward to reading it again...which is why I have offered it as a ring...so it will eventually come back around to me:)

If you have seen the movie High Fidelty...and liked it...you will love the book! I re-watched the movie after reading the book...and I still think the movie is excellent(the book is better though!)

The book is based around the main character, Rob, his record store, his past relationships, and more important, his current one(or the lack of his current one)...I often times will find a book humorous...but rarely laugh out loud...and this one I laughed out loud more than once:)

I can't wait to see what everyone else thinks of it!!

Since this is a bookring...I will also include the synopsis from the back of the book...

Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his whole life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films(Reservoir Dogs...);top five Elvis Costello songs(Alison...);top five episodes of Cheers(the one where WOody sang his stupid song to Kelly...). Rob tries dating a singer whose rendition of "Baby I Love Your Way" makes him cry. But maybe it's just that he's always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think(awful as it sounds)that life as an episode of thirtysomething, with all the kids and marriages and barbecues and k.d. lang CDs that this implies, might not be so bad.

Wow, so I have had no time to read this. I'm going to send iton to the next person as soon as I get an okay, and hopefully they won't be swamped with work.
lennonchick, may I be added to the end instead? I have english class this semester in school, but I think that by the time it would get to the end, I would be either in second semester, or finished.

Thank you for Sharing!
I really enjoyed this book. It was quickly engaging and It's a quick read. I could have easily read it in one or two sittings. I loved the contrast between the witty, honest internal voice and the blather that came out of his mouth. I'll PM Notbob today and get it in the mail as soon as I get an address.

This is an excellent book! I liked the movie, and I was wondering how much of that was due to the writing and how much was from the good acting. Turns out it was the writing. I think every person who has left a relationship will be able to relate to much of this book.

This was a quick, enjoyable read. After seeing the movie, which is set in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, I was a little surprised that the book's setting is in the U.K. The book is true to the movie, however. I used to know a number of men who were like Rob. I guess, just like the protagonist, they aged for the better.

Thank you for sharing this book. I am happy that I read it.
This book will be sent to sejent after the holiday.

This book was mailed to sejent on 12/28/03. Although a release note was made, the site was being revamped and it disappeared. Hence, the edited journal entry.

I don't understand why this author is so popular! This was his second book I read (the first was How to Be Good) and still I don't see any reason for all the hype around him!
Rob struck me as someone who doesn't really know what he wants from life! He cheats on his girlfriend and then he wants her back. When she does get back to him he doesn't want her anymore. He judges people by their record collection and snobs whoever has something he doesn't like. How shallow can you get?
There wasn't much in this book that made me want to laugh, most of the time I just felt sorry for Rob. If there really are people like him they can't be very happy, in my modest opinion!

Journal Entry 21 by loopy1 from Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 31, 2004
The book arrived in a gloriously sunny Kent this morning. Thanks, I look forward to reading it :-)

It's always interesting to read a book that has polarised opinions on it!
The only other Nick Hornby book I've read is About a Boy, and I found the main character fairly similar in both - wandering through life without really having decided where he is going.
I found Rob fairly irritating at times, although it felt more interesting in the middle.
I didn't find the book particularly funny, although there were several places that made me smile. Altogether though not a particularly cheerful read, which is probably the main reason for the number of stars. Well written though, and easy to read, with believable characters.

Journal Entry 23 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, April 27, 2004
I have just today returned from 5 weeks of travel, and was very excited to find this in my pile of mail.

Journal Entry 24 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, June 27, 2004
Unfortunately, I spent the first half of this book thinking - this is why I prefer to read the book before I see the movie. Cos I like to visualise the people in the story myself. But I LOVE this movie, have probably seen it about 7 to 10 times, and John Cusack is hard to get out of your head!

But once I got past that - this was brilliant. Set in the UK instead of the US, and other little differences. Hornby's writing is great, and witty, and sarcastic, and snort-out-loud funny.

This is Rob's journey to, what?, become a man? A man in a relationship? A grown up? The doubts, the temptations, the what ifs, and all the dramas of love about being thirty in the nineties. But hilarious! Loved the Sid James Experience sequence.

One passage I wanted to remember...
'People worry about kids playing games with guns... Nobody worries aboyt kids listening to thousands-literally thousands-of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to sad songs longer then they have been living the unhappy lives.' (p.25)

Thanks for sharing this one. This is the first Hornby book I have actually read. Looking forward to more!
