We, The Accused
6 journalers for this copy...
Journal Entry 1 by Midlifecrisis from St. Austell, Cornwall United Kingdom on Monday, February 16, 2009
I bought this second copy of We, the Accused to replace one that went missing in action on the first leg of a previous ring. I think it is such a great read I could not bear not to share it with some other readers, hence this second copy. I have bearyfriend's address and will get this in the post to her this week. I do hope someone else will share my enthusiasm! The running order for this very select ring is:
bearyfriend - Singapore (will send international)
bilbi - France (will send international)
Tregossip - UK (EU)
lucy-lemon - UK (EU)
Bookworm-lady - Spain (EU)
On its way to Singapore!

Thanks very much, your book is now safely in my hands, as well as the cat. I'll get into it soonest I'm done with my current read before its next travel to France.

Sending off to the next reader tomorrow. It's quite a long read, esp a lot of detailed descriptions about the locations in olden days England, but glad I continued and the story became interesting few chapters after. The author was really good in his acute studies of the characters and their human behaviours, which makes me wonder whether was he previously from the law enforcement, and that he had based this story on an actual case during his time? And having watched Ian Holm in Lord of the Rings as that Mr Bilbo Baggins, I have also tried visualising while reading how he portrayed that timid & fainthearted Mr Presset in this thriller. I would love to watch the film adaptation if I could get it. Thanks MLC for the good recommendation, it really keeps me on edge esp during the run, worrying at the outcome. Hope the next reader will enjoy it too.
Received today !
Two bookrings to read before starting this one !

I'm afraid i was not in a mood to get into this novel...
Nevertheless I read the end to know what happened ;-)
Well...
I've just realised the first copy was stalled and now the first reader with this new copy didn't get into the book...
I do hope someone else will share your enthusiasm too ! \o/

arrived this morning and thanks one and all. Will be finishing my Agatha Christie over the w/e and get stuck into this.
Thanks bilbi for the postcard, what a beautiful place. I'll add one of Cornwall for the next reader.
Well I tried twice to get into this - not in the mood. Met with Midlifecrisis last week who'll not be offended for any adverse comments from me. So gave it a 3rd go and still not in the mind frame for this.
have PM'd the next one today

I'm so sorry to have kept this book so long and not to have journalled it. I moved house just as it arrived and I think it must have been packed up.
I haven't been able to get into it, and as I don't want to hold it up any longer, I will post it to the next participant as soon as possible. Sorry again!

Received today, with lovely postcards from Lucy and Bilbi.
Let's see if I find it interesting; past reviews are not very encouraging but... who knows?
Thanks for sharing it!

I really, really liked it!
It is true that Mr Raymond's style is sometimes too painstakingly descriptive; that is why we must go through a complete biography of every new character appearing in the novel. His scenery descriptions are also very detailed.
However, once past this, you find a very attractive insight into the mind of a man; even though what he does cannot be forgiven, you end up feeling sympathetic towards him. Something similar to what Truman Capote achieved, years later, with "In Cold Blood".
The female characters are also well depicted; this helps to see how female roles have changed through the years (Paul's lover is considered to be "faded and past her prime" at 30!).
A quote:
(...)one's own life is always so much more important than anyone else's (...)"
I would have liked to watch the BBC series based on this; I am sure that Ian Holm made a superb Paul Presset.
Thanks for sharing this one with me, Midlifecrisis; sorry that I kept it for so long (it didn't allow for fast reading, I'm afraid!). It will soon be back on its way to you...

Thanks Bookworm-lady for getting this back to me, and thanks one and all for making a success of this little ring. I am sorry that it was not a resounding success with all! But delighted that I have found two fans to share my enthusiasm. Best wishes and thanks again.
