In 1903, two vengeful brothers and a pack of bloodhounds track a mysterious young woman across the western wilderness. She is nineteen years old. A widow by her own hand. So begins The Outlander, an original and wholly satisying read.
I enjoyed this very much. The writing is quite elegant and evocative, and the story is both an adventure yarn and a journey of the mind, heart and soul. Mary is an extremely interesting character and her experiences and ways of dealing with a world that both troubles and enchants her makes for a strikingly original narrative. A particularly impressive first novel.
