"A book is a mysterious object, I said, and once it floats out into the world, anything can happen. All kinds of mischief can be caused, and there's not a damned thing you can do about it. For better or worse, it's completely out of your control."

This book was just a fun and entertaining read from start to finish. I enjoyed the characters, and I liked the fact that it didn't read quite as simply as the chick lit book I originally expected it to be. I enjoyed this story more than I liked "The Girl Who Stopped Swimming". That was a rather strange story. This one had more believable characters and situations, and yet ended up surprising me along the way. I've been through Alabama, with the kudzu everywhere, and the little nowhere towns, so it wasn't hard to conjure up the look and feel of Arlene's hometown.
Handed off to powaybabe, who I know will love this story!
I caught this book from judygreeneyes! Thanks, I am looking forward to reading this.

Oct 2, 2012: Moved to the short list, hoping that it can be released in time for Pinkoeria's November E-Less Release Challenge!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overview: For 10 years Arlene has kept her promises, and God has kept His end of the bargain. Until now. When an old schoolmate from Possett turns up at Arlene's door in Chicago asking questions about Jim Beverly, former quarterback and god of Possett High, Arlene's break with her former hometown is forced to an end. At the same time, Burr, her long-time boyfriend, has raised an ultimatum: introduce him to her family or consider him gone. Arlene loves him dearly but knows her lily white (not to mention deeply racist) Southern Baptist family will not understand her relationship with an African American boyfriend. Reluctantly, Arlene bows to the pressure, and she and Burr embark on the long-avoided road trip back home. As Arlene digs through guilt and deception, her patched-together alibi begins to unravel, and she discovers how far she will go for love and a chance at redemption.
March 22, 2013: Well, didn't get to read it in time for 2012's November E-Less Challenge, but reading it soon and saving it for THIS year's challenge!
April 5, 2013: Started reading this book today!
April 8, 2013: Holy cow! She didn't waste any time getting to the crux of the matter, did she? Where can it POSSIBLY go from here? Ready for a wild ride!
April 18, 2013: Well, I finished it. I was upset that she tipped her hand so early in the story. Even though there was a lot more of the story to tell, I felt cheated out of a big ending ... OK, being saved for the "E-less Release Challenge," so you won't see another journal entry til November!
October 17, 2013: Offered as a RABCK to send off as part of Pinkoeria's E-Less Release Challenge in November. See this forum thread: CLICK HERE.
Wow, thank you for sending this my way!! It arrived safely in the mail this afternoon. I look forward to reading this novel. :-)
I read or rather listened to my first Joshilyn Jackson novel on audiobook earlier this year... If you haven't read Joshilyn Jackson's 'The Girl Who Stopped Swimming', then I highly recommend it too.
I also found a used copy of Joshilyn Jackson's Back Seat Saints at our FOL Used Bookstore not too long ago, which I look forward to reading soon as well.
