Bought on sale today.

Isabel Bookbinder might not be leading the most glamorous life ever (measuring column inches at the Sunday Mercury isn't exactly the job of her dreams) but luckily she's developed a foolproof plan to change all that. She wants to become a bestselling author. Admittedly some of the obstacles are a little daunting, but Isabel is sure that a woman of her ingenuity and creativity can find a way.

"Nitwit" might be one description of Isabel. I thought of less glamourous terms - self-absorbed, immature, thoughtless, for three.

I didn't much like her. Thing is, I am not a fan of lightweight chicklit. The one thing this book had going for it, for me, was that it was quick to read. It also gave me this opportunity to write a biting review. And who doesn't love that?

Isabel Bookbinder is a 27-year-old clerical assistant at a major newspaper. Because her father expects more from her, she prefers to tell her parents that she actually is Assistant Editor of the Arts section. Thus we get a clue early on that Isabel lies easily. And she does. She is quite proficient at plucking lies out of the air, always with the aim of making herself look better. Oh, it's innocent enough...until it isn't.

She wants to become a famous novelist. The writing part is a bit of a problem but she has the rest of it worked out - the Look, the publicity plan, the accessories, and more. She wants the life of a famous (and not reclusive) novelist, in other words, but not the actual work.

She lives in fantasyland, always imagining herself in that famous-novelist life, with the famous-novelist house and so forth. It's all very cute - until it isn't.

Because of a reckless error, brought on by a lack of good judgment, Isabel finds herself persona non grata at her newspaper. But never mind! She just met a famous novelist who wants her to be her Special Assistant. She moves into the famous novelist's home and takes to the life immediately. She tells everyone she is working hard on her novel but of course she is not. When a mistake gives her an opportunity to get a book deal she doesn't shy away from allowing an error in identity to keep her from trying for that deal.

In the end, after digging herself in deeper and deeper because of deceptions she has allowed, Isabel is lifted lightly out of her troubles by a man who thinks she is funny and creative. Nowhere in their conversations did I detect either creativity or humor, but that's me. I suppose one could say that deception is creative, of course. Lie your ass off and somebody will think you are ingenuous and cute.

I know, I know, you want to know what the first sentence was. I chose this book from a list of first sentences, not knowing what the book was.

God, I feel inspired.

Could you blame me? I mean, yes, that easily fits into floaty chicklit but it could also have been something really funny by somebody who actually is inspired.

And yes, I admit that when it comes to this genre I am just a curmudgeon. If you like chicklit pay no attention to my words! They are just the meaningless flailings of an old fuddy-duddy.

"A book is a mysterious object, I said, and once it floats out into the world, anything can happen. All kinds of mischief can be caused, and there's not a damned thing you can do about it. For better or worse, it's completely out of your control."
