Book was released during a Meet Up.
Set in the 1940s, this was John Grady's coming of age story. When John's parents officially divorce and his actress mother decides to sell the ranch, John and his buddy Lacey Rawslins decide to hit the road and head for Mexico on horseback. On the way they encounter a thirteen year old runaway, Jimmy Blevins, who turns their adventure into a dangerous encounter with the Mexican police.
John Grady receives a lot of hard knocks during his months in Mexico. He works on a cattle ranch, makes the mistake of falling in love with the owner's daughter and winds up in a Mexican jail for a number of weeks. By the time he returns to Texas he has left his youthful ways behind.
A little knowledge of Spanish will be helpful when reading this book. There are a number of conversations in Spanish that I had to skip which caused a gap in the story line.
While this is not the type of book I usually read, this was an interesting diversion. I think its more of a guys novel.
