I teach a weekly class for K-3rd graders on story writing. We write stories as a class and when two groups of students want the story to go in differing directions we have a vote and majority rules although as the instructor I do have veto power. We were doing an exercise where I read them a story and we then rewrote the story in our own way. We read the classic Chinese folktale The Magic Brush and began our own version. Skinny Malinky Spurtle has come to class with me twice and both times became the focus of the story. The first time it was intentional, I told the kids we should write about her, the second time was totally unexpected. In The Magic Brush A Retelling Skinny makes another appearance. I fear I have created a monster. If nothing else she's obviously made a profound impression on my students! This copy will be going back to Braemar so she can see what mischief Skinny has been getting into.
I LOVE this book - it's a sheer joy. Glad to see that Skinny has become a muse for the Off Campus Story, Story Club.
I had no idea quite what would happen when I sent Skinny out into the world, but she has exceeded even my fertile imagination.
Thanks BigKat for sending me copies of these delights.
