Still reading it

Just a taste of the writing: (page 1) "What idiocy, to be racing into this story and its labyrinths, sprinting away from our happiness among the fresh spring grasses by the oak." And this: (page 39) "I watched our friends' wary, intelligent faces droop at our tale. Their shock was a mere shadow of our own, resembling more the goodwilled imitation of that emotion, and for this reason it was a temptation to exaggerate, to throw a rope of superlatives across the abyss that divided experience from its representation by anecdote." This book is by a master writer. The subject is fascinating, I would have called it 'stalking' and I think the penalties for it are harsher in the U.S. at this time than they were in England at the time of the setting. Still, I could so easily see the police acting this way, "have you thought about getting counseling?" would probably be the current thinking (and I love what he says about that, "Twenty years ago I might have hired a professional listener, but somewhere along the way I had lost faith in the talking cure. A genteel fraud in my view." The getting the gun scene was almost slapstick, and so apropos.

Thanks Oliviapoolside, your book arrived today in the post. Love the photo you included, we went on safari last year and it is great to see wild animals up that close. I can't wait to get my teeth into this book, especially as I enjoyed Atonement so much. Thanks once again x

28/1/09 Finished the book last night and loved it. I was sucked in from the first page and struggled to put it down and enjoyed it more than Atonement. Stalking is definitely the word for it. Felt so sorry for the guy when no one would believe him. I am reluctant to pass it on as I would love to read it again, but seeing as it has started its journey I will, and will try and get hold of another copy to read some other time.

This book was passed to me by my daughter, I have never read anything by this author before, I thoroughly enjoyed it a bit different to what I usual read, as my daughter stated it certainly dragged you in from the start, and you just wanted to know the outcome. I will look out for more books by Ian McEwan. I will release this book into the wild on my next travels.
