OK - I am on page 138 and I can unequivocably state that the book is a million times richer and more beautiful than the movie.
I'm so glad to be reading it - and I think I may have been born in the wrong time. Technology seems to me to be pulling us away from each other, and even airconditioning has had a deleterious effect on fellowship.
We are building a sitting porch right out front, and I am going to set myself on it and enjoy the view!

Yup - I've finished it and it STAYS a ten! So much better than the schlocky movie. Wonderful - makes me wish that I had such a fun and friendly cadre of childhood friends (I did) who stayed friends throughout adulthood (we didn't). Wah!
