Blackbird House: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle)
7 journalers for this copy...
This was a collection of a stories revolving around the various occupants that lived in a farm house on the "outer reaches of Cape Cod." Each story is intertwined and follows a 200 year history (which began with tragedy) of the Blackbird House. The tales are haunting, beautiful and touched with sadness. This was the second book of Alice Hoffman's that I have read. I am finding that I really like her writing style and look forward to delving into more of her tales.
I will be passing this along. Hope others enjoy this book as well.

The book has arrived, thanks a lot, imawinn2!! Special thanks for the background information about cardinals - your card and the bookmark with the pictures of that bird - I suppose we haven't got that wildbird in Finland. I'm curious to read and learn to know, how cardinals belong to the third story of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although it was full of sadness and melancholy. The language was lively and touched all my senses - I could almost smell the sea and jams. The stories were combined in an interesting way to each other, I liked the structure of this book.
This was the first book for me by Hoffman, but certainly not the last, I'm happy to have The Probable Future in my TBR-shelf, too :)
I had planned to let the cardinal-bookmark travel with this book, but now I can't find it anywhere :( I remember I've used it with some other book, so it will perhaps be found some day.
Now this book will travel to ruzena, who had Hoffman on her wishlist.

I loved this book!
Before this, I had read only one book by Alice Hoffman, The Probable Future, which was her debut novel. I found it "just OK" and not much more. Anyway it already revealed a pretty good storyteller.
This collection of short stories is great. As the back cover says in a review quotation, Hoffman's characters are so authentic that the fantastical seems almost matter-of-fact. The chain of generations and the blackbird motif ties the stories together, so the separate short stories make an interesting network. I liked the magic and metaphoric spices among the realism in describing these touching persons.
Thanks again, lukutuoli!
AVL and highly recommended.

Ansioituneelle kirjojen liikuttajalle :)
Thank you for another book I can't wait to read, ruzena!
I have another Hoffman in my tbr pile, too. Let's see, which one I'll go for first. And I'll be sure to keep this book moving once I've read it.

It took a while for me to read both Hoffmans that were on my TBR shelf but now I know I must get my hands on her other books, too! Good thing she's been quite prolific. Hoffman's writing is magical and the stories of pain and loss – with a glimmer of hope to boot – are simply beautiful. I love the way the stories in Blackbird House all circle around the house and the blackbird motif. An added plus is the location: I spent a couple of days on the Cape a few years ago and would love to go back for a longer stretch. It's a beautiful place.
Kuriiri kuittaa ja toimittaa Hoffmanin kirjan kirjakolle huomenillalla :) / The courier will deliver the book to kirjakko tomorrow evening in Vantaa :)
I had totally forgotten all about this First sentence pick -RABCK, but thanks, the book looks interesting and has some raving BC-critiques.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Releasing books as it is The Day of Book and Rose. Left in the library's exchange shelf.
Caught this book as was looking for something to read in English. I'd say better than average, so far, but haven't finished it yet. Been a while since I read short stories but this one seems to work. Thanks to everyone in the chain for passing on this book. I plan to release it when finished.
