Just finished this book today. Really enjoyed the book- a fascinating look into the lives of the French who lived in Occupied France. I didn't know the backstory of the author until I read the appendix. Her story was almost more interesting than her writing. Definitely recommend...

Reserved for my Trade PB VBB.

Arrived safe and sound. Thanks so much, jnpert! You've run a great VBB - I have very much enjoyed all three rounds, and I've heard great things about this book.

Very glad I read this. It definitely felt unfinished, but the author's talent is remarkable -- due to the scope and insight into the situation, it is hard to believe that this was a contemporary account.

Part 1 was by far my favorite, although not as polished as part 2. It just kind of ends; most of the characters' storylines are not really completed. In reading the appendices with Nemirovsky's notes, it would seem that the characters were intended to resurface in a later part which was never written. But it was so fascinating that I could barely put the book down. The characters are rich and multi-faceted, and I enjoyed reading about a historical event that I knew practically nothing about.

Part 2 was a little duller for me, but the story certainly wraps up better.

Overall I would definitely recommend this.

Made a brief stop at my home...heading out in the fiction/literature bookbox.

I read this book a few years ago: like others here, it's where I learned about the experience of occupied France in WWII. Horrible, let's hope times like those never return.
