A Christmas gift. One of the 2009 Canada Reads selections. Read it in two days! Review to follow.

I was charmed by this book. I do have to say though that I wanted to be charmed by it. I usually enjoy coming of age novels. I'm not entirely sure why that is, whether I am some sort of sadist who enjoys the pain of others or whether I need constant affirmation that I turned out pretty normal. Maybe coming of age is just something I, like everyone, can relate to.
I had the impression when I started this book that it was a funny, gay coming-of-age story and I wanted it to succeed on that basis. It did. I would not say that it was laugh out loud hilarious. It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud when I'm reading. But it was funny. In hind sight, growing up is pretty funny. At the same time it was rather sad and touching. You could not help but empathize with Peter in his desire to be accepted, his fantasies to be popular and loved, and his needing to know and be happy with who he is.
Francis pegged perfectly the absolute horrors of adolescence and I would hazard a guess that everyone reading this book will remember with absolute clarity their own horrors. I certainly did and they were pretty funny too.
Should this novel "win" Canada Reads? I don't think it will but I would not be unhappy if it did. I would love to see a relatively unknown author become popular and loved.
