Indulgence: One Man's Selfless Search for the Best Chocolate in the World

From the back:
"Everyone loves chocolate. From Willy Wonka to Ferrero Rocher, the Cadbury's Flake girl to the man from Milk Tray, it is embedded in our culture as perhaps no other foodstuff. Depending on who you listen to, it either clogs up your arteries or reduces the risks of cancer; it is the bringer of acne or the 'Prozac of Candy'; it produces the same chemicals in your brain as when you fall in love.
Paul Richardson has had a sweet tooth ever since his grandmother fed him Lindt milk chocolate animals as a boy. In this fascinating book he satisfies a lifelong craving by travelling the world to find out the history of this most popular of foodstuffs.
Part travelogue, part cultural history, part literary gastronomy, Indulgence is full of the hilarious, the delicious and the downright bizarre."

Read some, skimmed some, skipped some. A very detailed and interesting story of chocolate - I wish I'd been able to concentrate on it properly. My head's in such a turmoil at the moment, though, that I have serious problems focusing on anything really.
Next off to another bookcrossing chocoholic(?) :D

Very interesting book - full of knowledge, history, cultural history. It took some time for me to read this - and it also took some chocolate to read this :)
Next reader will get it as a Christmaspresent, just like I did!

Thank you for the book and the lovely presents -all of them- my Secret Christmas Angel. My cat loved the toy mouse and the soft ball! The chili chocolate, aloe vera candles and cranberry tea I got were also lovely.
Merry boxing day and happy new year for you!

I have picked this book up more than once, but I just haven't gotten into the right mood to properly read it. The book is actually quite heavy reading. The writing style is such. I have skimmed some of it, but as much as I love chocolate I have to let the book go unread.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This was actually more fascinating than I expected, especially the first chapters about Mexico and Venezuela. This guy really takes his chocolate seriously! But I wish I'd read this before going to Oaxaca, because I don't think it ever crossed my mind to try any sort of chocolate drink back then... I guess I just have to go back now!
Will release it at the Oslo convention in a few days' time. Should probably attach some chocolate to it, but after reading this I'm way too self-conscious about my understanding (or the lack thereof) of high quality chocolate, so whoever picks it up will have to do their own shopping :D
** Kolmenkympin haaste #24: lue ja journaloi kirja, joka käsittelee suklaata
** And I want to add MANY THANKS to azuki for the lovely surprise, a Mexican-style chocolate bar!! Haven't tried it yet as I think it deserves to wait for a special occassion... Was nice to meet you at the convention too, perhaps see you next year in Bordeaux :)

I love food, I love travel, and I LOOOOVE chocolate, so this book is really shouting out to me from the buffet table. I am so glad nobody find this before I did.
Thank you for passing this book on. And sakirmo, if you read this before the convention ends... find me! I have something for you!!

I am glad I finished this book, because honestly, my chocolate intake seriously soared while I read it. Thankfully (or not), chocolate is well stocked both at home and at work... I work at a retail store that sells chocolate too, and we used to have El Rey. I wish we still do, so I can sample it while I read about Venezuelan chocolate. Unfortunately, due to economic and political reasons, it was out of stock for months and we had to find other reliable supplies.
And sakirmo, I hope you enjoy the chocolate, and get a taste of how chocolate is like, grounded on stone mill, before Swiss invented conching to make it so smooth. It's pure serendipity, as I brought along a bunch of chocolate for gifting at the BC con. I found myself left with a wheel of the Mexican chocolate, and figured I would just save it for the road, when I journaled my books and saw your entry. It seems like I'm destined to carry the chocolate half way around the world just for you! Thank you for sharing this book! This is one of my favorite brand chocolate sold at my workplace, I love the gritty unrefined texture and rich flavor. Also love how pure it is with only two ingredients: organic cocoa bean and organic cane sugar (plus vanilla, almond or whatever flavor it may be).

Read a little, skimmed a little. The author is passionate about chocolate...as he should be! As any right-thinking person should be! Ha! One insight he brought up that I thought was good: chocolate is in it's own food group. It's not really food but it's not really dessert. In my opinion, it's just plain necessary!

I pulled this from the recent Food Bookbox. I shall save this for a read soon.
Paul Richardson travels around the world and back into time to share with his readers the story of chocolate.
My favorite part of the book was the part of one chapter in which he talks about French chocolate. I also enjoyed the information about Hershey chocolate.
Other than these two parts, I must admit that I read quickly through the chapters about the history of chocolate in the New World and chocolate in other parts of the world.
