Another I swapped out from Mojorisin2's UK BookBox this morning. Thanks for adding this one in, Jackshome, it's the only Nick Hornby I haven't read yet! :O)

Promised to Herrundmeyer in Germany next.

Update 3/11/03

It took me a while to read this one, initially because of the shock of it being Nick's memoirs and reminiscences about football, rather than a 'proper' story like 'High Fidelity' or 'About A Boy'.

It's a sweet, charming, often funny series of pieces concerning one life-long football obsessive's attempts to justify said obsession with The Beautiful Game. I once read that 'if you think you're going mad, you aren't. True lunatics never doubt their sanity.' Well, he's just about border-line, then; completely obsessed by Arsenal, but still just about able to see the ridiculous side of it all, and the ludicrousness of the extremes he is prepared to go to (or to endure) to see even an 'inconsequential' match.

Above all, though, I just love the way he writes, with passion, a scratchily dry self-deprecating humour and an awful lot of sparkle.

Off in today's post over to Jens...happy reading, sweetie!

Wow, I didn't even remember requesting it - anyway, thanks, Lucy!
I've seen the movie already, also without knowing that it was really autobiographical. I'll add this book to my growing, swaying TBR pile.

Never judge a book by its cover - it's a bit battered (see picture), but the content is really good. Now, this is what life as a football fan is like.

I'll have to second Roddy Doyle who said that this book is "Funny, wise and true".

Got this book from Buecherfressers English Bookbox.
I actively dislike football, but in the introduction it said one need not like football, and to read about another person's obsession seems interesting, at least after reading the first three pages...
