Bought in a box set at a local charity shop. No. 437 on the original 1001 Books list.
I saw the film when it was re-released a few years ago following the death of Kubrick, so was curious to see what the original material was like. I had forgotten the slang used by the narrator and his droogs, luckily my basic Czech helped a lot, though you can pick up the meaning in context. It does make you slow down, which is no bad thing, as this is a thought-provoking book.
One of the main themes of the book is the choice of being good or bad, something that makes us human. By taking away that choice, so someone can only do good robs a person of part of their being. Has the book dated? Well, I don't really think so, the slang is unique, which helps. Also, we are living in a time of random crime and violence and society is always trying to think up new ways of rehabiliating its criminals.
What a read!
