As you read this book, you realise that there are no coincidences. Almost everyone John meets is linked to the mysterious conspiracies surrounding him, but there is always a logical link from one acquaintance to the next. After reading all 1100+ pages and the author's afterword I was still confused!
This LiveJournal entry includes links to two sites about 19th century slang, which I found very useful while reading the book.
Don't read this one until you have finished the book, as it contains my ramblings about the central mystery and is full of spoilers.
