Raven's Prey

This is a book that actually pays attention to real Alaskan character, both of the wilderness and the people. It was written by a man who used to be a guide and musher, and you can tell he really lived in Alaska. Here's a quote:
"When grizzlies get angry or alarmed, they whoosh. Some say it is the evil coming from them. Whatever it is called, it is one of those sounds you never forget, like the sudden crack of breaking river ice or the slide on a pump shotgun. Grizzlies growl mostly in the movies. In real life, they moan and whuff and whoosh or they clack their teeth, except when they are talking to themselves or their cubs....It is done suddenly, and the bear is always serious when he does it."
The story is about tracking a murderer through the Alaska wilderness, and the danger of playing mental games with a madman and/or Ma Nature. Won't tell you more. It's good.

I found this book in a box of used books. I am planning to read it in January and then pass it on!
