This was a little disappointing. Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds was one of the first grown-up books I read as a teenager and I remember really liking Morgan's Run, but On Off was not one of her best books. I was interested in who the murderer was and I liked the police detective character, but something kept happening to take me out of the story. A lot of times it was her use of Commonwealth slang in a book set in the United States, which was quite distracting. I also felt a little dumb because I didn't quite get the twist at the very end. I can't say any more here without saying "spoiler alert," so I'll just leave it at that.

It's on to its next reader now, minesayn in Ohio, who won it as part of my monthly RABCK drawing. Enjoy!

Thanks to collectorkerri for the book. Once again, totally forgot that I won this rabck. I have always enjoyed all the McCullough books that I have read, most especially "The Thorn Birds" so am looking forward to reading this one. Thanks again for the book.

Twists and turns dominate this Carmine Delmonico mystery. It's 1965 and the term 'serial killer' is not used; it is multiple murderers. Regardless of the term, as the novel opens, parts of a young woman's body is found inside a refrigerator in a research laboratory. Thanks to a macaque who is freaking out, the body is discovered, bringing Lt. Carmine Delmonico on the scene.

All of the people from the lowest to the highest in this facility are under suspicion for this murder, and it is up to Carmine to figure it out.

Then another body is found with a similar profile: sixteen-years-old, mixed race, impeccable manners and mores. Is this the second murder, or are there other disappearances that may up the total?

Discovering the pattern as more young women are raped and killed, Carmine and his crew race to figure out who is doing this before too many more bodies end up in the morgue. How many deaths will occur before the Connecticut Monster (the killer) (or is it killers as Carmine suspects?) is caught?

Surprising twists continue until the very last page (but don't skip to it because otherwise it will not make sense).

This is not the first Carmine Delmonico novel I have read. I read one that was written after this one and it was equally good.

@collectorkerri...I had to read the last couple chapters twice (mainly because it was late, I was sleepy when I finished, and didn't read it carefully enough) to understand it all. If you are interested, I could explain it to you in a PM so as to not spoil for other readers. As for not being as good as some of her other novels (The Thorn Birds, for example), this was a completely different genre for her. How can it ever compare to The Thorn Birds?
