I found this photograph book from La Coopérative in Paris. My husband became also interested in it as he likes photographing. I will take this book with me to Finland and look through it more carefully at home.

I have had this book on my shelf for a year. I have had time on giving up this book so I think I'm keeping the book for a while still. Photos need to be looked at several times as there are many things in pictures you don't notice at once. I'm not so into the way photos are framed but the people, their face expressions, positions and clothes are fascinating. I especially like the various t-shirts people wear on the pictures; I don't know what that tells about me.:) Unfortunately I don't know French so the introduction and other useful information about this photographing project is out of my reach but on the other way the photos tell the viewer a lot more.

Here is a (bad) translation to English of the french text (by Sucrette).
"When in Chicago, I was very excited and anxious : a road 3500 km long to Los Angeles with 120 kg luggages, cross 8 states… Will people understand me and help me ? My first idea, out of Steinbeck books, was travel along the mythic road 66, and meet the ghosts of past. This "Mother road" is now deserted…Formerly "diners", motels, drive-in… Beautiful cars with families on their vacancies, ans also farmers driven by misery, leaving everything behind to seek work in California.
All along, we tempted to meet people who had seen the "dust bowl".
Far for "clichés",I wanted to capture people's faces and emotions. Lanscapes dont mind. I was seeking reel America, America of little towns where people know the value of time ad welcome you.
I used a camera Sinar 20 x 25 cm (very heavy): needs to spend time whith each person. I had also a Polaroid and I could give to each person a picture of himself. So dialogue was possible. I met all along generosity and complicity, it was the stronger experience of my life.
I dreamed of writing something about each person I photographied, but I prefered let the pictures speak. Read this book whith your eyes and your heart.

Pas mal!

Was pleasantly surprised I could still understand some French, enough to read the foreword to the book at least!

The photos of course, are the focus here. Somehow I kept imagining them in colour, would be interesting to see how that would change the feel of the book.

I did enjoy the photos, most of them, and they reminded me of my dream to some day travel, very slowly, from coast to coast in the US.
