Not as well written in some ways as the other books by Gaiman that I've read (American Gods, Coraline), but a good story. The blurb on the back comparing it to Alice in Wonderland is apt -- I love what Gaiman does with London's landscape.

Released on Monday, May 05, 2003 at English Department at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island USA.

Leaving in a friend's mailbox.

Woo hoo! This book is calling to me and I want to dive into in right now... but no, it's midterm exam time (enough said) :P

Oh well, I'll get to it in a couple of weeks hopefully!

Thanks zugenia!

Alright, I officially have no will power. I *should* have been studying for my linguistics midterm, but no, I just *had* to start reading this book, and well, I don't know a whole lot more about The Structure of Modern English today than I did 2 days ago :P

Oh well! I really enjoyed the book! It was very creepy, which I like, and I absolutely loved Gaiman's use of descriptive language, combining some very unusual elements, for example, "...hit the ground like half a ton of wet liver being dropped into a bathtub," and of his dry humour in general: "He nodded to himself, glumly, hoping to give the vague impression of being a man in need of a corpse who was disappointed by the selection but was going to have to make do with what they had." I really like stories that, instead of taking you into another separate world, take you into a world that actually coexists with your own, in real-time. Makes you wonder what's going on underneath your own city, and what kind of people you may be overlooking. A very interesting interpretation of what happens to the people who "fall through the cracks," quite literally in this case. Also, very interesting dynamics between characters who need each other to further their own gains, purposes, and senses of justice. And finally, a very absorbing story (or maybe it's just that I was avoiding my linguistics textbook?) that takes you on quite a ride through some grim places, among correspondingly grim individuals. Excellent!

I managed to find time to read this one...I enjoyed it but it was pretty bizarre...Makes me think twice about the homeless I see on my street that's for sure...And not to be a stinker but at least three times he used the properties of mercury as a metaphor...Reminds me of another book I read where they constantly referred to the monk with the "tonsured head"...*sigh* variety is the spice of life, how about we throw some in that book for ya?

It really was a good book for all the grousing I just did so I would like to pass it on in the M-bag going to France...

I read it in French a few months ago ; I just loved it! I wanted to keep this one rather than release it this summer, but I found someone who wanted to read it :)

Merci beaucoup!

Very good indeed. First when I read what was on the back, I was sceptic but I liked it very much.
I'm going to give it back to Crevure who was kind enough to lend it to me;)
