Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram,* “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl’s fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere.

*pangram: a sentence or phrase that includes all the letters of the alphabet

WOW. I've had this book on Mt. TBR for years now. I'm not sure how it found its way to me from the crossing zone shelf, but it's safe here in my hands! It's possible that it got mixed in with the 2011 BookCrossing Convention books that came home with me. Or maybe someone handed it to me at a meetup.

At any rate, I've finally read it. This book went to San Antonio, Texas, with me this past weekend, and I finished reading it on the plane back to Washington, DC.

I've always loved the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" and even have a t-shirt illustrating it. So the idea of a town that is centered around that brilliant sentence and its creator is an interesting one. And when letters start to drop off, it seemed realistic that those inhabitants would then drop the letters from their alphabet. But the book quickly turns into a literary-based dystopia, where using certain letters is cause for banishment.

This is a creative, humorous, and rather dark story. I definitely enjoyed it and especially liked the ending.

Picked this up at today's BCinDC meetup at Potbelly in Alexandria, VA. I've read it so I decided to share my thoughts:

Most of us are familiar with the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." I first saw it when dealing with computer fonts, since it contains every letter of the alphabet. This story takes place on a fictional island off the coast of South Carolina, named for Nollop, the creator of the above pangram. The denizens of the isle are obsessed with language and have a statue to their beloved founder with his famous sentence tiled below. One day, the Z falls off, which the island council decrees is a sign from Nollop that they must no longer use that letter. Progressively other letters begin to fall off, which similar results. Since this book is told in letters, the writing itself ceases to use the letters in question as they fall off the statue. The writing becomes increasingly hilarious and maddening as the residents struggle to remain coherent in the face of a rapidly shrinking alphabet. Usually I don't like stories written around word games, but this was a lot of fun. Definitely recommended to lovers of language.

I did not take this home with me. I hope its future readers enjoy it!

Chosen from large pile of books from the BCinDC Nov. monthly meet-up.
There is a sticky note on it, not for wild release...it's been going around the BCinDC group to be read.

Really cute title and premise.
