WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Wishlist RABCK.
Passed on to me at Ucon - thanks AliceF : )
This is the third Sebastian Barry novel I have read. Set in county Wicklow, it is the beautifully written story of Annie Dunne and her cousin Sarah, on Sarah's 13 acre farm. The story of what happens the summer Annie's nephews two children come to stay has some surprisingly dark undercurrents. The prose is often hauntigly beautiful, the Irish voices ring out clear and strong, as we become emersed in the fragile world of Annie Dunne. We understand quickly how her life has been, the small incidents and the larger disappointments that have marked the passing years. With the arrival of the children she expierences a variety of new feelings. Her comfortable world is threatened and she must struggle with some difficult ideas, about things she barely understands. Really wonderful writng, and quietly unforgettable.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
If you have found this book, thank you for taking the time to look it up on the internet. Now please tell us what you thought of the book and what your plans for it are.
Thank you for this very kind RABCK, Heaven-Ali. I love getting a parcel from the postman, especially when it's a book from my Wish List that I really, really want to read. I added several of this author's titles after enjoying The Secret Scripture, the only one of his I've read so far, and look forward to returning to Ireland in my imagination in his company. Unfortunately it's far too long since I've been there in person, I'm well overdue another visit.
And thank you for the lovely postcard as well. I shall add it to my Memories of BookCrossers collection :-)
Personally I think the present is a totally inappropriate tense for telling a tale from the past, and unfortunately the story itself didn't drawn me in as deeply as I was expecting, but it's still a very good read, one I'm prepared to recommend.
Barry has a poetic way with words. This novel is an emotive and evocative depiction of a long-gone way of life. I can scarcely imagine living in the wilds of rural Ireland as the 50s gave way to the 60s.
I do have one burning question: What on earth's a Peggy's-leg? From the context it would appear to be some sort of sweet - but I could do with having the field narrowed slightly, please :-)
I'm planning to take this with me to the BookCrossing Convention in Amsterdam, April 2010!
Update (8.4.10) According to the Encyclopedia section of the Goumet Britain website -
"Peggy's leg: An Irish form of toffee containing brown sugar, molasses and syrup and flavoured with ginger. It is pulled out into sticks - hence the name."
Oh dear, I should have guessed! I know that wooden legs are often called peg legs but my imagination failed to make the jump to a sweet on stick! Doh!
Thanks to bluenoser for Googling the information :-)

BookCrossing Anniversary Convention 2010 (Theater Griffioen) in Amstelveen, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Friday, April 9, 2010
Released 14 yrs ago (4/17/2010 UTC) at BookCrossing Anniversary Convention 2010 (Theater Griffioen) in Amstelveen, Noord-Holland Netherlands
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I'm planning to bring this to the Convention with me and will leave it somewhere at the venue on the Saturday but don't yet know quite where or when....
With only a week to wait, this is getting very, very exciting :-) It's already disturbing my sleep patterns :-(
CANCELLED!
Volcanic ash stopped play! With all UK airports closed and all flights grounded for a couple of days, I can't get to the Amsterdam Convention after all. I'll have to think of somewhere else to leave this now ....

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I'm having an Away Day in York, meeting Tree-hugger and Katisha50. It's not Amsterdam - but it should be fun! I'm hoping this will now find a new home back in Birmingham, which might not be quite what Heaven-Ali had in mind when she sent it to me (Thanks again, lass) :-)
Thanks, Nu-Knees, it has a temporary home back in Brum with me.
Sorry you couldn't get to Amsterdam, but the alternative event was good!

This little book is now safe & sound up in Nth Yorkshire after being 'booknapped' from the Urban Coffee shop in Brum last week. It had a most pleasant train ride 'home' to Teesside & it will be read as soon as possible. Thanks very much.
