I read an American English translation of this some time ago and wan wondering how it would be different translated into English English. Then I came across this rather battered copy and thought I'd save it to read in parallel with a French edition, but I've not got round to getting that yet so, as it's a nice thin book that will fill a hole in the box (see below) I thought I'd get it registered and shared.

Here's what I said about the other edition:
Having no idea of the plot, it is a coincidence that I read it just before Kafka's The Trial and it made for an interesting comparison. This protaganist is at least aware of his crime and the system is somewhat less labyrinthine than Kafka's absurdist nightmare, no matter what the comments on the back of some editions imply. What struck me is that both 'heroes' are in the end resigned to, even welcoming, their fate. However this one, unlike the other I would re-read - and it would be interesting to see if it feels different in the original.

A powersul story not too far outside with today's judicial system. I haven't yet read The Trial but am even more interested in doing so.

I read this in one sitting and really enjoyed it. The lack of remorse from the accused really fit well with his character and personality and the complete lack of emotion regarding almost anything. I was annoyed with his lack of commitment to Marie and the lack of emotion when dealing with his deceased mother.

I really wanted to know what happened with the poor dog though and I hope he was returned to his owner. I also wanted to lnow around what time the book was set as the punishment did seem rather severe.

Back to the library xx

I liked this book a lot.
It tells about some events in a person's life. Some of them are not at all spectacular, but they leave a certain impression on the people who are also taking part. When something serious does happen, these earlier events are brought to the line light (again) and then worsen the situation.

The inevitability of the events in this book, the stoicinism of the main character, the understatement with wich the story has been told, to me make this book so good, nice to read.
