Picked up in a charity shop somewhere, I forget which one. I loved Penelope Lively's Moon Tiger and Cleopatra's Sister.
This reminds me so much of Mrs Dalloway for its dreamy, multiple-focus, reflective narration.
The lead character, Matthew, is an architect working in London. He's the ideal vehicle for a story about how times, names and places change but people basically stay the same. Love, loss, doubt, fear and the search for stability are echoed throughout the book, from his day-to-day experiences, to the ghosts of the people who've inhabited the same spaces in past times.
