I thought this book was almost perfect. It is a great read...no doubt. Eric Schlosser goes into tremendous detail on the fast food culture. I thought it was great that he made other parallels that are indicative of today's society. We like things fast and easy. I thought that his attention to detail and the research that he conducted was outstanding.
Yes, he does go into gross detail about the actual food. However, what I found most frightening is how big business has been conditioning us as consumers through out all these years.
What I did not like about this book is that he did not keep a balance....politically. It was obvious to me that Mr. Schlosser is a card carrying Democrat. In his book, the Republican anything can be equated to Satan. The Clinton Administration can do no wrong. For the amount of detail that he researched about the industry it does not seem that he did objective research when it came to his political views.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a very fascinating read. I will be releasing it to Choclaholic who wants to read it next and then have asked it to be sent to Betsy-STL.

Read from September - October 2003.
Presented here are some of the power politics behind some of America's biggest brand names. The author did extensive research, and told us in a nice narrative tone about such companies as Walt Disney, Coca-cola, the Gap and of course, McDonalds. I knew that Disney and McDonald's were movers and shakers in the world, but wow, I didn't know how far and wide their influences lay.
Some of the memorable highlights were tidbits like: McDonald's is not really in the burger business, but profits most from real estate. Or, Subway is not really in the sandwich business, but in more interested in selling franchises. We learned that even Walt Disney had a dark side. We learned that the tastes we love are not wholly natural, but manufactured in chemical plants off the Jersey Turnpike.
After reading this, I was left with mixed emotions. If I take the stance of "forwarned is fore-armed", -- then, knowing what I know now, why do I still feel so powerless? Then, alternatively, if I think to myself, gee, I wish I never read that at all if ignorance is bliss where 'tis folly to be wise -- well, that's a helpless feeling, too!
Reading this book only reinforced my already too cynical theory that humans are a kind of freak of nature and really shouldn't have even survived this far; and with the marketing guys guiding us towards our Brave New World, I fear America is doomed to decline and fall like all the other empires the world has ever seen.

Rec'd in today's mail. Wow, this was really a surprise. I thought you guys had forgotten about me and I signed up for a bookray for this book which is in route to me now. Well, I'll be able to forward that one to the next person when it gets here. Thanks so much! Your books are on the way.
"Fast Food Nation" was a very well researched and informative book. It covers the history of the fast food industry and its suppliers, the exploitation of its workers, and the danger of eating hamburgers. The chapters on the meatpacking industry reaffirmed my decision to stop eating red meat 11 years ago.
I'd recommend this book to EVERYONE.

Thanks for the book! :-) I can't wait to read it.
I didn't even finish the book. I don't think non-fiction books are for me. They always take a couple of weeks for me to read.
Anyways, I just couldn't get into it, I got about 2/3rds of the way through and that was it for me.
I think this is on reserve cause I owe it to someone, if so it'll be passed along soon.
P.S. Unlike some people I've heard, I'm not turned off from Fast Food, maybe you have to be an adult to really find the revoltingness (is that a word?) in this book.
