Third book in the Russell/Holmes series.

All things are quiet for Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, until Dorothy Ruskin, an amateur archeologist, brings them a scroll dating from the first century. As Russell begins to decipher the scroll, she realizes that its very existance could change Christianity. Then, murder enters the picture, and Russell and Holmes must try to discover if the scroll is the reason for the murder, or if there is some other motive afoot.

Again, Ms. King combines great characterization with a solid, page-turning plot. Excellent, and highly recommended!

Used trade paperback, with a different cover (could not find a photo of it).

A surprise RABCK from scavok. Thank you so much! As a Sherlock Holmes fan I look forward to reading this series. The game is afoot for the second book. ;-}

Another excellent novel from Laurie R. King. I enjoyed this one quite a bit...more than the second in the series. I have to say I liked the first and third books where Holmes and Russell play an equal part in the story.

I don't want to talk too much about the change in relationship between Holmes and Russell (don't want to give it away to those who haven't read the second book) I must say I think King has done a superior job of conveying their partnership. The relationship seems perfect and natural. I simply cannot imagine how it could be any other way.

I also am enjoying King's "Editor's Preface" sections in the series as they give us a "mini" mystery to watch unfold as the series progresses.

I can't wait to begin "The Moor!"

Finally got to this book late last week and finished it today (on my lunch hour;+) It is terrific. I think that I enjoy these as much as the original holmes. And I agree that Russell and Holmes relationship works out perfectly and flows quite well in the story. I also caught that Sherlock used the alias "Basil" in this. I LOVE Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. These are my favorite Holmes movies and I picture Holmes as Basil Rathbone. If you guys havent seen any of them, find one and watch, they are in black and white, but are so appropriate as to Watson and Holmes, especially if you like old movies.
Thanks alrescate for giving me the opportunity to read this series!! I will be sending this on soon to Virginia!!

Finished reading. I found this better than A Monstrous Regiment of Women, but not quite as good as The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

Mary has arrived in Gilbert! After enjoying the last two books so much, I can't wait to read this one. Adding to my stack'o rays.

Thoroughly enjoyed this entry to the series. One of the things I like about this series over the original SH stories is that he is a fully developed person in these books. I learned even more about him through his wife's eyes in this book.

Will contact Theresa-A regarding the bookray.

A Letter of Mary is now here with me in Germany and it seems we´ve got a rainy weekend ahead. The perfect time to start reading this book :0)

I have finished reading "A Letter of Mary" shortly after it arrived here but didn´t have the time to make a proper journal entry until now.
I think it´s another great book in the Russell/Holmes series and I readit in almost on go. I´m growing fonder of the couple with every new mystery and I´m looking forwar to "The Moor"!
I have also found a copy of "Justice Hall" (I think it´s the sixth book in the series) by chance in a shop and this is awaiting its turn on my bookshelf.

Mailed to Virgulina in Portugal today (BlossomU asked to be skipped). Enjoy!

Journal Entry 17 by tho on Friday, August 20, 2004
Passed to me by Virgulina yesterday ... I didn't enjoy the last book very much, so I'm afraid I'm not looking very forward to read this, but I'll give it my best try :-)

Journal Entry 18 by tho on Friday, September 3, 2004
Well, I really, really tried but couldn't get into this book at all ... The relationship between Mary and Sherlock just doesn't seem to work for me - no chemistry there whatsoever ;-) I read the first chapters but then just skimmed through the rest of the book ... Thanks alrescate for organizing these bookrays, nonetheless, I'm really grateful I was able to try them out :-)

Zyana has asked to be skipped for this one also (a huge TBR at the moment ;-) so I'm sending it off to Theresa-A today.

Journal Entry 19 by tho on Wednesday, September 15, 2004
Theresa-A seems to be unavailable, and BlossomU is not interested in reading the book, so I'll be contacting alrescate soon to know what she'd like me to do with this book ...
