Absorbing book about a real crime committed in Victorian England. Horrific murder that stunned the people of England and caused them to turn to a detective for answers and peace of mind. Painstakingly related to the development of detection in fiction. Thoroughly researched and annotated. Even more fascinating because of the reality of the events, which read like something conjured up by an author.
