Terrorist

Interesting territory for Updike - as when he wrote The Coup - where he is taking on foreign materiel. But this is set is a New Jersey I know (and currently work in), namely Paterson. Though Updike's knowledge of Paterson was limited, it makes sense. Some of the 9/11 terrorists did live there for a time, and the immigrant population is large. More so it is a mixed (in many ways) boy who is caught up in everything and that gives Updike a chance to comment from both sides. Not in his top 10 novels (many reviews were harsh) but I found it a worthwhile read.
