Picked this up at a local thrift shop.

Back Cover:

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.

When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

I enjoyed this quick read. It reminded me of something that would be on the old Twilight Zone series in that all appears ideal in this utopian community but, in actuality, there is something quite disturbing going on underneath the surface or behind the scenes.

This is one of my favorite books! I'm so glad it found me! I will probably keep this in my permanent collection, until my daughter reads it.

This was a very good story, though disturbing and even a bit frightening in its own way. It's a book for young readers, and I guess that's why it seems frightening to me - I'm not sure what my reaction would have been had I read it in my early teens. And the ending to me did not seem so straight forward - was it real or a hallucination?
