Christian fundamentalists have just taken over the government, and scripture is law in their new police state. Women, stripped of all rights, are assigned to be Wives (infertile trophies), Marthas (servants), or Handmaids (breeders). Atwood's writing is as poetic and moving as ever, although the book is a radical departure from her other novels. With 1984 and Brave New World, one of the Trilogy of Increasingly Likely Futures.
