This is the sequel to the Newberry Prize winning "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", which I read a few years back. I don't remember the novel being as dark as this one is but I do remember it being very well written.
The Logans are a black family living in Mississippi during the Great Depression. They are like other families in that they are struggling to survive and get ahead but unlike other families in that they own their own land and are determined to do just about anything to hang on to it, knowing that owning land is their ticket to total freedom. Government farming programs, white land owners, and racial prejudice are among the many things that make their lives difficult.
A very inspiring look at one family and their love for each other. Highly recommended reading.
