Excellent story, very well created with inserts out of fairy tales...our hero girl's alter ego?
I can only hope now that the TV drama will be broadcast again to see what they made out of the novel.

Thanks Gabriella!

I'm looking forward to reading this pretty soon, not least because I spotted someone else now has it on their wish-list...so hopefully in the next couple of weeks...depending on how my house-move goes!

Thanks again. :O)

Update 8/6/03

What a strange and wonderful little book! I found the first half/three-quarters a little more gripping than the last section, but throroughly enjoyed it nonetheless...and for a book I thought might be quite a dry read, there was a sparky throwaway humour to it too...a favourite incident follows...

'I felt a bit awkward too so I went to the Sunday School Room. There was some Fuzzy Felt to make Bible scenes with, and I was just beginning to enjoy a rewrite of Daniel in the lions' den when Pastor Finch appeared. I put my hands into my pockets and looked at the lino.
'Little girl,' he began, then caught sight of the Fuzzy Felt.
'What's that?'
'Daniel,' I answered.
'But that's not right,' he said, aghast. 'Don't you know that Daniel escaped? In your picture the lions are swallowing him.'
'I'm sorry,' I replied, putting on my best, blessed face. 'I wanted to do Jonah and the whale, but they don't do whales in Fuzzy Felt. I'm pretending those lions are whales.'
'You said it was Daniel.' He was suspicious.
'I got mixed up.'
He smiled. 'Let's put it right, shall we?' And he carefully rearranged the lions in one corner, and Daniel in the other. 'What about Nebuchadnezzar? Let's do the Astonishment at Dawn scene next.' He started to root through the Fuzzy Felt, looking for a king.
'Hopeless,' I thought, Susan Green was sick on the tableau of the three Wise Men at Christmas, and you only get three kings to a box.
I left him to it. When I came back into the hall somebody asked me if I'd seen Pastor Finch.
'He's in the Sunday School Room playing with the Fuzzy Felt,' I replied.
'Don't be fanciful Jeanette,' said the voice. I looked up. It was Miss Jewsbury; she always talked like that, I think it was because she taught the oboe. It does something to your mouth.
'Time to go home,' said my mother. 'I think you've had quite enough excitement for one day.'
It's odd, the things other people think are exciting.'

I've checked back on the Wish-List, and as it seems like quite a few people would be interested in reading this one (and rightly so!), I thought I'd turn it into a bookray...I'm sure Esther and Gabriella will be keen to see it 'spread the good word' too...;O)

So, if you'd like to join in, just PM me or drop me a line through my homepage and I'll be delighted to add you to the travelling order...anyone who joins the ray after it heads off into the big wide world will be added to the end of the list. Hope that's okay for everyone. :O)

***Please do show consideration for the bookcrossers patiently waiting to read the book after you. Wherever possible, I would ask that you endeavour to get it back on the road again within a couple of weeks of receiving it. If your turn is rapidly approaching and you find that you're up to your armpits in rings and rays, do drop me a line and we'll work something out.***

Current reader is in the pink:

Buecher-Eule - Germany
Fanclub - US

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3 (erm, 4!)

1. When you receive the book, make a journal entry so we can all see that it has landed safely.

2. PM the next person on the list to request their address. (If you haven't had a reply from them after a week and two PM's, move on to the next name down and drop me a line to let me know what's happened- we can always loop back for anyone who misses out due to holidays, etc, but I'd like to keep the book travelling reasonably quickly if at all possible.)

3.. Read the book, and make a journal entry to let us know what you thought. :O)

4. Make release notes/a journal entry to say when the book is leaving your hands and who'll be catching it next, and pop it into the post!

That's all folks...and thanks for playing!

Yikes, it seems I forgot to journal this when it first arrived. Somehow I think I was missing my brain for a few weeks. Lucycat, the book arrived safely, sorry for causing any worry.

I was not able to sleep the other night and ended up reading the entire book. What a treat! Just a wonderful book, the characters were done so well. I would love to see this BBC TV drama.

Thanks for sharing this book with all of us!

This was quite an interesting little book - I liked the blend of narrative and fairy tale. At times I think some of the metaphors went right over my head, but perhaps I just wasn't paying close enough attention.

While at times my mind wandered a bit from the story I really appreciated the writing as I found it to be incredibly funny. Like lucycat I especially enjoyed the scene with the fuzzy felt animals, but my favourite quote by far was the "But happiness is not a potato" line found on p.94.

I'm sending this one on to Grorser tomorrow.

Journal Entry 13 by Grorser from Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada on Wednesday, August 20, 2003
This is a riveting read - the pull between individuality and the crowd of the church is palpable. The fundamental "old time religion" is full of hell-fire and damnation - best illustrated by the author's choice of names for the 8 sections of the book - one for each of the first 8 books of the old testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges and Ruth.

The ending is oddly disquieting - a resolution of sorts - but very unsatisfying in some ways while delightfully apropos in others. Let us know what you think after you've read it.

Would like to let this sink in and read it again someday down the road. Will be on the look-out for a copy to live here on our own shelves.

This is off to Ardy next - hope you like it.

DECEMBER 30th UPDATE:

178 pages... and there were so many memorable scenes and situations packed into this small book. I found myself laughing out loud at several portions of this book... but some struck me as quite sad as well. Amazing writing, I am going to look for some of Winterson's other writings. Thank you very much for sharing this.

I really enjoyed this old book. Amazing that I could almost envision this mother, praying on her knees while her carefully crafted life falls apart at her feet. But yet, she keeps going on, in her self-righteous way, with no care for the others around her: praying for souls but not caring about people. I love the Christmas scene when she get the elephant foot and the catapult (for hurling the neighbor's cats).

It starts off interesting but the rambling almost stream of conciousness style eventually drags the book down. I think its one of those books that would make more sense after seeing the film, rather than the other way around.

Like most people I lived for a long time with my mother and father. My father liked to watch the wrestling, my mother liked to wrestle; it didn't matter what. She was in the white corner and that was that. Mother also had over-ambitious plans for her adopted daughter. She was to become a missionary, a saint, a public emblem of her own evangelical purity. But this daughter has very different ideas of her own.

I'm sure that most of you, like me, have gotten used to people asking "whatcha reading" and "what's it about?", and having to explain that you don't know because you just started. This is the first book in a long time, though, that I had to say I didn't know what the title meant yet.

To be honest, I really didn't like the ending either, although some extra thought on the title as a unifying theme brought a little more satisfaction. Likewise, the excerpts about Princess Winnet and Sir Perceval didn't have more than passing relevance until quite near the end, as well.

All in all, I'd say I rather enjoyed the book, and it makes for a quick read, too. If you enjoyed it, too, I recommend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. The story is quite different, written from the perspective of a young boy with Asperger's Syndrome, but the tone feels similar.

Off to Tamster33 tomorrow!

I don't know what I was expecting from this book, but I really didn't enjoy it very much. I'm greatful for the opportunity to read it though, as it's something I probably would never have picked up on my own. Maybe it's because I don't know much about the bible or because I have serious issues with organized religion, but I found this book very difficult to read - I could only read a few pages at a time before wanting to put it down. That's why it took me so long to read (and it's such a short book, too!). The writing and descriptions were great, but I found that I was more interested in the "fairy tale" within the story than the story itself. It makes me sad that there are people that are so judgemental about the actions of others without pausing to review how hurtful their own actions are.

Anyway, as soon as I get an address, I'll send it on.

i've had this with mw for months now, and although i didn't journal it then (massive apologies), i've read it so long ago that i can't recall the plot with much detail anymore.
i liked it, but prefered "sexying the cherry", where symbolic imagination cleary took over - here there's a shy attempt, very typical of 1980's postmodernism. mostly, i wished the book was more outspoken in terms of homosexuality, because towards the end i felt it sinking back to "the love that dareth not speak its name" spirit. but the religious obsessed mom is such a powerful character (hm, i don't want to sound provocative, but i met a few ladies quite alike her in northen ireland and then back home here in portugal, i'm afraid), as well as the other female characters. the fairy tale bit was also quite ingenious - especially since it hdan't really been done by then, despite now ancient claims that fairy tales are the quickest road to our unconscious. oops, this is getting very pretentious, isn't it? i'd better finish off apologising once again for having it in my possession for so long and thanking you all for letting me read this.

now i have a question - what do i do with the book? for some reason, i can't find the bookring order...

I'll echo what others have said: what an odd little book! I mostly enjoyed it, particularly the infusion of mythical/fairy tales into the story. I liked how she felt that her love for other girls was just a matter-of-fact sort of thing. However, I did not like the ending at all. I didn't really get any resolution out of that.

So now I'm trying to figure out where/when to release.

Started reading this book when it arrived and finished it the next day. The little girl in the book reminded me of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. Both girls were precocious and around adults most of the time. Whereas Scout's father was her primary parent, it was Jeanette's mother who set the tone in her family. We hardly hear anything about the father. It's a great book. I'm now sending it to salinger007 who has it on her wishlist.
