When he falls ill on his way home from school, fifteen-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. In time she becomes his lover. She enthralls him with her passion, but puzzles him with her odd silences. Then she disappears.
When he next sees her he is a law student and Hanna is on trial for a hideous crime. As he watches her refuse to defend herself, he realizes that his former lover may be guarding a secret she considers more shameful than murder.

Adding to jsmeltser's 1,001 bookbox.
Selected from the 1001 book box. Thank you! I haven't seen the movie yet and I'm pleased to have the chance to read the book first.
Still processing this. I thought it was a great book. Thoughtful and analytical without ever being tedious. Painful but beautiful. A complex book: a nostalgic portrait of someone who was actually a flawed and damaging person.
I will be putting this back on the 1001-library "shelf."
