Found it in a pile of second hand books. Had heard a bit about Fred Hoyle the astronomer, so decided to read the book to see what kind of author he was. By the way, the cover doesn't look anything like the one shown in the post - the cover of this book shows a picture of a hiker, viewed from below, climbing a cliff.
