The book is here—it has been here a few days, but my Internet access has been limited. Thanks so much for sharing the book and sending it my way (along with the extra surprise!), hyphen8!
I'm almost half-way finished with the book, and I'll get this one flying again as soon as possible. :)
Trade paperback, 287 pages
From the back cover:
Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned across the years to save him. After this first summons, Dana is drawn back, again and again, to the plantation to protect Rufus and ensure that he will grow to manhood and father the daughter who will become Dana's ancestor. Yet each time Dana's sojourns become longer and more dangerous, until it is uncertain whether or not her life will end, long before it has even begun.

As expected, Butler hits a home run with this one. What a powerful story. I was so caught up in Dana's struggle to come to terms with not only the fact that she is traveling through time, but that there is a purpose to the time travel that will ultimately determine the fate of her family. As in most of Butler's books, the characters aren't all "bad" or all "good" but tend to display a spectrum of human qualities.
I truly enjoyed this story, and I recommend reading the essay attached at the end. It contains some interesting info about Butler's life and how she started writing science fiction. Her brand of sci fi—focusing more on human relationships and struggles as well as social commentary—appeals to me so much more than a lot of other books in the genre. She never considered Kindred to be science fiction though, and I have to agree with that now.
The world is definitely worse off now that Ms. Butler is no longer in it.
Thanks again for sharing this, hyphen8. I have mrsboknows' address and will get the book in the mail during the next week.

Haunting, slightly disturbing (in the I-can't-believe-how-people-treat-each other way), compelling and hard to put down. I read this book in 2 sittings and passed up sleep just to find out how it ends. I've never read this author but Kindred made me a fan. I will actively search for Butler's other books. I hope the others on the list after me enjoy it as much as I did.

Just an update: I'm finally done with the book I was reading and can get started on "kindred".
This was a powerful and unforgettable story, I'm so glad I read it! The first hand account of the antebellum South not from a slave's perspective but from the perspective of a twentieth century black American who travels back through time and becomes a slave -- it's impossible and yet so real. The story itself is terrifying. I've read so many stories set in the pre-Civil War era, but none of them really gave me the sense of being there, the sense of being trapped and having no choices, that this book did. I tried to imagine myself, as a Jew, being transported to Nazi Germany...
Thanks so much for sending this book out -- I hate to think I never would have "gotten around to it". I'll be mailing it this week.

Update: In the mail to Erishkigal!
kindred is here, will be started right away~
my apologies hyphen8 and all for taking so long. I actually started this wonderful book the night I posted it's arrival. I was off the next day, and instead of doing any of the many things that needed doing I spent the entire day unable to put this down! So it should have been journalled and mailed on long ago....and I have thought about the book since then, recommended it many times, just haven't managed the round tuit to sit at the computer and write about it. Part of that was feeling "what can I possibly say that will do justice to this book," and so I procrastinated.
And, of course, I can't do it justice. This book was amazing. Butler was amazing. And I read it a week after Obama was elected President, which had me on an incredible high, and I was blown away by the juxtaposition of Dana's experiences, and this immense change in our real world. And saddened that Butler wasn't here to see it.
Thank you, hyphen for sharing this book! it will soon be on its way to New Mexico~
Jan. 15: I realized I already had ladyofunicorns address, so went up to the PO That very afternoon. Window was closed, so I used the automated. I think I bought a confirmation tag, but being the holidys, I don't know what I did with it. If Kindred doesn't show up in NM in the next couple of days, I will do some serious searching.

Update: Erishkigal did send this book to ladyofunicorns and was told in a PM received February 22 that it had arrived safely about a week before.
However, there hasn't been a journal entry from ladyofunicorns even though both Erishkigal and I have pm'd asking for an update on the status of the book.
At this point I'm thinking of sending this book to the lost book island and sending a replacement copy to the remaining people on the list...

I am so sorry that I have not journaled this wonderful book. I hadn't been online for a while and I also had misplaced the book. I am almost finished reading it and I will check to see if I am still to send this to the next person or what.
This is an excellent book and I would recommend it to people.

This book came back to me after 2 months, barely sealed and rubber stamped with a note that said "Forwarding Order Expired" - but arugh48187 has confirmed that I sent it to the correct (and current) address.
Frustrating.
I'll try sending this out to Minnesota again tomorrow. This time I'll try adding delivery confirmation to see if that will help. :(
Delivery Confirmation Label/Receipt Number: 0309 3220 0001 0235 4606
Update 3/23: well, it's gotten to California, anyhow. At least it's crossed the ocean.
Update 3/26: now in Saint Paul, MN. Almost there...
Update 3/27: says available at PO box. Sent arugh48187 a PM.

It has arrived. Sorry it took so long to get it. Going to the post office with two small children is pure torture and not something I relish...even for a book. ;)
I have always been intrigued by time travel, and this one was very well done. I cannot fathom what it must have been like for Dana to become a slave after her whole life as a modern women. It is truly atrocious what was done to our fellow humans and to have to endure it stoically would have been even worse. I didn't really get why Kevin went back or how it added to the book (maybe to give her story believability and for him to know what it was like). Despite this minor complaint, it was a good read.
Thanks for sharing. It will go in the mail to the next reader in a couple of days.

Just received Kindred, will read next and send on.
I enjoyed the story and it was a fast read. Character development was done quickly, but I found very little depth to any of them. I will PM the next person on the list and get this out the door next week. Thank you for including me in this bookring.
