Molly Cates is the star of The Red Scream. She is a writer for a magazine in Texas as well as the author of a book about Lou Bronk, a serial killer, who has been on death and is now about to be executed. Known as the "Texas Scalper," he was found guilty of several murders but sentenced to death for killing Tiny McFarland, the wife of a wealthy builder. He actually confessed to all of the murders, and testimony from people at the McFarland house also helped to nail him. However, while awaiting execution, Molly begins to receive mysterious letters that claim that there's a new killer in town...and then people start dying. To add to all of this, Bronk decides to recant his confession just days before his scheduled execution. Molly begins to question whether or not the right person is in prison, and begins to investigate based on clues he's left her.

I can't say any more, because it will give away too much.

I didn't find this to be a great mystery, but it was pretty good and I will definitely read other books that feature this character.
