Pagan Holiday: On the Trail of Ancient Roman Tourists

As someone who loves ancient history and travel, this book was a great blend of both as well as a good dose of humor. A bit crude at times, but a read I couldn't put down! Going to send it to a globe-trotting friend and hope she enjoys it too.
I had just written an entire journal entry when the internet ATE it!
I thought I'd journaled this back when it arrived in my post box in Utah, but apparently not. It made the trip back to Nebraska with me and I just finished reading it in conjunction with a mystery set in Rome.
I liked the idea of retracing the steps of ancient Roman tourists. I guess I didn't know that tourism was that old. But the Pax Romana and all those roads they built were perfect for travelling! The author, Tony, and his girlfriend, Les, traveled from Rome, through Greece, down to Egypt and the Nile. By the time they had finished, Les was 7 months pregnant and Tony is toting her all over northern Africa. What patience she must have.
I appreciated the history part more than the travelogue bit. I wasn't really impressed by some of his current impressions but this was a part of history I wasn't familiar with. An interesting book!

Arrived today in the post with other books. Yay, book package! As it's a travel book, I may take it with me on my next vacation (in May). We'll see if there is room in the suitcase for it to come along. Thank you for the book AND the bookmark, too.
Haven't made the time to read this, so am donating it to library or thrift. Happy travels, travelers.
