I'm reading it now and will probably release it today.

I took a strong dislike to this author from the time that he describes Ann's rapist near the beginning of the book. I also didn't like the way he wields his substantial intellectual prowess and his observational acuity. He uses these things like weapons to mock those upon whom his characters must be based. I felt a supercilious attitude coming through his words. Nevertheless, the book is creepy, atmospheric and gripping. He does nail his characters, time and place. Ann herself, nevermind illness, drugs and the destruction of her young psyche, seemed like a conduit of grace to me. It is a very powerful book.

Wow - what to say here. I have a lot of feelings over this book. I agree with OliviaPoolside about the author using his "intellectual prowess" at times. The characters came through loud and clear for me - the twisted step-father/rapist (boy! can I relate to that one!), the opportunist 'friend,' the angry logger who blames himself for his quadraplegic son, the priest that may or may not cross the line and humble Ann - were all too real and pathetic and heroic at times. Just like we are in our life. I enjoyed the read and wasn't too suprised at the outcome - the journey there was the best part.

I found this book in a box that must have arrived during our busy season and gotten buried under other things. Adding it to my TBR pile. Thank you!
