In August 1941 an eighteen year-old Japanese girl, Hiroko, comes to the United States for one year to go to college. Upon her arrival, she went to the home of her uncle and family in Palo Alto. Hiroko had been raised in the ancient traditions of Japan so California was a different world. Her cousins were more American than Japanese. She develops a special friendship with Peter Jenkins, her uncle's assistant at Stanford. On December 7, Pearl Harbor is bombed and Hiroko is now an enemy in a foreign land. The story is told through the lives of Hiroko and her uncle's family of the terrible time in history when Japanese and Japanese Americans are forced to give up their freedom, businesses, jobs, homes, and belongings and live in relocation centers.

This is one of Steel's earlier novels that is told with history and substance. A good read.
