Here is Lily, a photojournalist in search of the "animal people" who supposedly haunt the city's darkest slums. Here is Hank, who knows those slums all too well. One night, in a brutal incident, their lives collide--uptown Lily and downtown Hank, each with a quest and a role to play in the secret drama of the city's oldest inhabitants.
For the animal people walk among us. Native Americans call them the First People, but they have never left, and they claim they city for their own.
Not only have Hank and Lily stumbled onto a secret, they've stumbled into a war. And in this battle for the city's soul, nothing is quite as it appears.

I picked this up at the second hand bookstore thinking it was one of the titles I've read but didn't own. Surprise to me when the next week as we were unpacking books from storage to go on a new bookshelf to discover I in fact owned a copy of this already...
I'm a firm fan of de Lint's newford books. I love the short story collections, and have been happy with how many of his stories have started delving into the first people. Saying that, I loved this book! I was drawn into its story and it wasn't slow in any way.

Mailed to Hyper7 who took it from the Sci-Fi/ Fantasy VBB.
Got it!
Thanks very much!

To be honest, during the first few chapters I thought it was going to suck. (I strongly dislike these new "urban fantasy" type books) but I was wrong. This was really very good, and I'll be looking for more of his books.
