It is a paperback edition with 127 pages.

From its cover: 'So what can happen when Tove Jansson turn her attention to her own favourite subjects, love and work, in this novel about twowomen lifelong partners and friends? Expect something philosophically calm - and dicreetly radical. Its publication is cause for huge celebration.' Ali Smith ........ 'A book about love - tender, eccentric and fiercely independet. It feels a privilege to read it.' Esther Freud

Update: 2010.01.11.
Well, I must admit it is not my cup of tea. Reading Moomins I was so enthusiastic to read other works from Jansson. Somehow I can't let myself in her adult stories, expect this one: The True Deceiver which I love(d) so much.

Journal Entry 4 by wingLadyIndigowing from Orange, New South Wales Australia on Monday, April 5, 2010
I am sorry that I have held this book up - February is always a busy month for me and though I did contact the next reader for their address, I have missed sending the book on...
In the past 6 weeks I have dealt with some family illness, a major family crisis (both located many hours drive from home) and three awful deaths within my commmunity. Consequently I have not been online very much and sometimes life takes over reading matters...

Hakkalina there is only one pm from you in my mailbox - which I have waded through these past 2 days -there are hundreds of emails to sort through

I will post this book to the next reader tomorrow when our post offices open again after the Easter holiday

Journal Entry 5 by wingLadyIndigowing from Orange, New South Wales Australia on Monday, April 5, 2010
This cannot be compared to Jansson's children's books ..
It was a mixed bag for me - the two central characters needed more development I thought, but then this is a collection of short stories and as such, short stories are meant to be self contained stories... not continuing on with two central characters

There are some wonderful pieces of writing in the book, some lovely pieces of prose, but not all throughout; this is difficult to achieve in the short story format and it is always difficult to read a translation

Thankyou for sharing hakkalina; sincere apologies for the delay in sending it on (I honestly thought I had posted it)

I'll now be posting it on to the next reader

:)

Journal Entry 8 by klaradyn from Praha, Praha Czech Republic on Monday, May 10, 2010
I thought this book was beautiful. It didn't really feel like a novel to me, more like a series of sketches about these two characters and their lives. So many wonderful observations about life and art! My favourite story was "Travels with a Konica".
Thanks for sharing this book, hakkalina!

When this envelope arrived, I thought hmm that looks familiar.. and then I realised it was one I had sent myself (to waderwoman) hahaha (probably with a moomin book? :p).
Thanks for sending it on waderwoman, and for the lovely goodies too! ^_^
I haven't read anything else other than the Moomins by Tove Jansson, looking forward to see how this will be.. Thanks for sharing the book hakkalina!

Journal Entry 16 by Tsjara at Alkmaar, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, November 14, 2010
This was quite different from her Moomin stories, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Her way of storytelling often has this sort of calm and atmospheric feel to it. The book seemed a collection of short stories or snapshots about the lives of the two artists. And it had some nice observations about life and art.

I will mail the book out to Atrus sometime this week :)

I got this in the mail a few days ago but -ahem- forgot to journal it.
I have another BC book to finish then I can read this one.

Journal Entry 19 by Atrus at Reggio Emilia, Emilia Romagna Italy on Wednesday, December 22, 2010
My Goodreads review: A different way of looking at love, through the small and normal things, the little idiosyncrasies, difficulties and compromises of a relationship between two older, temperamental persons. Though at the beginning of the book the relationship between Mari and Jonna might appear strangely detached, it doesn't take much to understand the complexity and the unseen between the words and to warm up to their rapport.

I'll add that I recently read The summer book on another BC ray and it was very interesting to notice all the similarities and the differences between the two. :)

Waiting for Salvami's address to send this on.

I enjoyed this one, too as must as I liked "The True Deceiver".

This is my most favourite line from Fair Play
"do not tire, never lose interest, never grow indifferent - lose your invaluable curiosity and you let yourself die."

Thank you hakkalina for giving me the opportunity to read this!

Already contacted bookmaniac70, I will send this in next few days.

Got in the mail. Thank you, salvami!

Journal Entry 24 by bookmaniac70 at София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Friday, March 11, 2011
The book should be viewed more as series of small sketches than as a story. It reveals the subtle relationship between two artists with charm and delicacy. One can see how important art and writing were to Tove Jansson. She praises the independance and solitude of an artist as an essential part of creative process. Art is regarded not as something solemn but on the contrary- it is innovative, fresh and sometimes whimsical, much similar to a child`s play. The artist is justified to create in order to enjoy looking at the world from different points.

While I really liked much of what was said on art and creativity, I admit that I place this book after " The True Deceiver" and " Summer Book" which in my opinion are true masterpieces.

Journal Entry 27 by Sujie at Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, April 6, 2011
Received safely today, thanks, bookmaniac. I read the Moomins when young although my youngest sister was the one who was obssessed with them (she kept tiny troll dolls in matchboxes and gave them names from the books ....I remember endless games). I had not realised Jansson wrote for adults and shall read this with interest. I dipped into it - the introduction and first few pages - but I'm off to sort out some "unconventional pairings" in my own studio - I have that "burst of practical energy" she writes of ....and why ignore it?!

Journal Entry 28 by Sujie at Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, June 1, 2011
Sorry I've had this book so long...just had to dip in and out of it. The narrative didn't hold me. I found it rather cold and tart, like a Woody Allen film where two characters carry on their own conversations with no regard for each other. Mari and Jonna seemed to have a life built on bickering, sometimes the dialogue seemed like a fight. Not at all "philosophically calm". Like waderwoman, I much prefer the Moomins!
That's not to say it was not interesting to read an adult novel by Tove Jansson, if novel is what it was. I loved the writing about the island/s and the sea. Reading this has made me curious about her other less biographical novels for adults which others mention here. Thank you hakkalina for making it available. PMing babydoll857.

Journal Entry 29 by Sujie at Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, June 9, 2011
Have PMed babydoll with no success as yet. I am about to go camping in the outback (Menindee Lakes, western NSW, to see the birdlife in the big Wet out there) for two weeks. Will send another PM but probably will not be able to post this book for two and a half weeks at least.
Apologies for delay.

Journal Entry 30 by babydoll857 at Isleworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, September 11, 2011
Sorry - I didn't realise that I hadn't journalled this book when it arrived in the post. Anyway, I read this pretty much in one sitting after a very hard day with my kids and it stirred up a lot of emotions in me. The writing is stark and to the point - well, not sure if there is actully a point - all the better in my eyes! I like that although it is a novel, the chapters as such are written like short stories. It is like a snap shot of these women's lives. My favourite quote is when they are discussing their fathers and realise that they never took the time to find out much about them: "We didn't have time. What was it we were so busy with?"...."Work probably. And falling in love - that takes an awful lot of time."
I found the final chapter pretty devastating - although I may be reacting too passionately to it as I've had a pretty emotional day! I won't discuss what happens as I'm not into spoilers, but the conclusions that they come to are quite sad I thought.
I see that I'm the last on the ray so will release it in my local coffee shop and hope someone deserving of it picks it up!
