I picked this up serendipitously from the library discard table. I hadn’t heard of the author or title but it’s part of the New Canadian Library and the blurb on the back made it sound interesting.
After reading it, I’m particularly delighted with this find. It’s the engaging and charming, partly biographical, account of the irrepressible and talkative Topaz Edgeworth’s life beginning in Victorian England and spanning almost 100 years and across the sea to Vancouver. I don’t know why this witty and gently humorous little gem isn’t better known.

I'm going to be lending this to my brother first and then we'll see who'll be the next lucky recipient.

Hadn't been to a BC meeting in a while, so had to check the shelf for treasures, Found this one. I loved Swamp Angel by this author and I know that I've read a least one other of hers. I really hope it wasn't this one! Thanks Mrsg.

I enjoyed this book immensely. Oddly, stepping back in time, both literally (the book spans a century between the 1840s and the 1940s) and in writing styles, was delightfully refreshing. Not a swear word to be found, but there were some words I intend to add to my own vocabulary. In particular: jannock, prink, and sneap.

I loved Topaz Edgeworth as a character. She accomplishes nothing noteworthy in her life, other than having lived for 100 years, and neither has she any regrets. She lives her life exactly as she wants. Frankly, though, I'm rather glad Great Aunty Topaz is not a member of my own family. She'd drive me mad with her constant babble.

I also loved the description of the pepper-pot/turret that accommodated the grandmother's bedroom and thus the four women of the house having tea, reading letters, sewing and folding sheets "sides-to-middles".

Truly a delightful, feminine story.

I plan to release the book into the wild for the Canada Day challenge in a couple of weeks.
