Mau is about to become a man. He left his 'boy' soul on the Boy's Island and it returning to the Nation for the feast where he would get his 'man' soul and be welcomed to manhood. But a terrible wave reaches the island before Mau does, and by the time he arrives, he is alone. Except that he isn't. The wave washed the ship 'Sweet Judy' ashore, and the sole survivor of that wreck, a daughter of a English aristocrat, joins Mau. Eventually, other survivors of the wave begin arriving from other islands, and Mau finds himself in the role of chief, working to build a new life from the wreckage.

An entertaining book, with themes about the role of belief and rational thought in societies, and the power of legend in forging identities. While this book is set in a world that nominally resembles our own, there are a number of uniquely Pratchett details along the way. These combine with the overall story (which has a bit of an Orson Scott Card feel to it) to provide a wonderful tale of discovery and survival.

I was wondering if this book was going to return, or if it was off to wander the world. The co-worker I gave this to found himself rather abruptly unemployed and returned to his home in Ohio. He finished the book and loaned it to a couple of friends, but it arrived in the mail yesterday in a box with some other books.

Journal Entry 7 by wingperryfranwing from Elk Grove, California USA on Tuesday, April 14, 2009
I had never read a Terry Pratchett story before - I don't think this one will be my last! I read a review of this in the Washington Post a few months ago and immediately put it on my wish list. ResQGeek was kind enough to send me a copy as a RABCK and I have not been disappointed.

Having never read Pratchett, I was not sure what to expect and found myself immediately immersed in a very exciting, humorous, entertaining story. It was basically a simple story of a boy on a South Pacific island who loses everything after a giant tsunami destroys his world. A young girl is also shipwrecked on the island and together they rebuild the Nation with the help of others who eventually show up in canoes from other nearby locations. The story takes place in an alternate reality sometime in the 19th century. There are some really great moments in the story (including how to get milk from a pig!!) and overall it was very enjoyable. Highly recommend.

I am starting this out on a bookray and will get the book in the mail to the UK tomorrow.

I am SO excited to get this book. It's the only Pratchett I haven't read, it's an uncorrected proof, and for some horrific reason it's the third bookring I've received in three days! *weeps* So, it might be a little while before this gets journaled. Unless I am cheeky and bump it up the pile. ;)

Thank you so much to perryfran and vekiki, I will make sure the postcard stays in the book. :)

Okay, okay, I admit it - I bumped it up the bookring pile and read it all in a day. :)

I think I enjoyed some of the Discworld books better, but this was still good. It seemed kind of... sad? But clever, and funny in many places, and always interesting. Thank you! I'm about to message DryKid for an address, so this should be traveling again soon.

I've been tracking my reading at Bkkeepr.com and the Velocity of Reading, too, if you're interested. :)

I cracked and read this book on Sunday instead! Not a typical TP, but I admit I love and adore the Discworld novels *way* too much than I probably should. An interesting story, not without its moral dilemas, but frankly, TP, sorry, Sir TP (I do apologise) - stick to the Science Fiction/Fantasy please, I found this whole premise a bit forced and then simplified to really carry much message to me.
Oh well, posted off to k2005 in Oxfordshire today from Godmanchester Post Office to catch the midday post collection.

I continue to be amased at the writing capacities of dear Sir Terry! I just adore the Discworld series, although I haven't even made it halfway through the series just yet. This book is different from the discworld series in many ways. It is a more serious book, but that doesn't mean it isn't funny. It still is hilarious at times. I enjoyed it a lot and somehow it fit right into what I was doing at the time. (No I wasn't shipwrecked on an island ;) !!) Plain and simple: I loved it.

I'll send a PM to the next person in line!

I so wanted to like this book since I'm a huge Pratchett fan, but it never really caught my attention. As AgnesXNitt I think that the premise was a bit out there. I don't know if I had like the book more if it was by another author, but a Pratchett book without DEATH, Carrot, Sam Vimes and the rest of the gang is apperantly not my cup of tea. The book still made me smile at places but I missed the more subtle and understated humour which makes the Discworld novels fantastic.

The book will continue its journey sometime during this week.

Nation arrived today. Been waiting a long time to read this tale. Thanks for sending it my way. :-)

Journal Entry 54 by imawinn2 at Neenah, Wisconsin USA on Saturday, January 14, 2012
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this Terry Prachett story. Obviously, it is not a Discworld but about a "round world" set in Victorian times. This was a book that I really liked and wish I could read it all over again to pick out more of the tale's tidbits, nuances and deeper meanings. On the surface, it is a story about a young island boy, on the edge of entering manhood, who rides out a large wave and discovers that the wave has wiped out his whole island village. The wave, however, has deposited a large sailing ship with one lone survivor... a young British girl of high social standing. Together they must now make something out of nothing. As you peel the surface of the story away, you discover that Mr. Prachett has cleverly opened the door for examination of much deeper subjects such as religion, politics, death, life and grief. Now this sounds all a bit grim, but don't you fear, Mr. Prachett has sprinkled his special brand of humor throughout the book. You will also discover that he is a true master of words which may cause you to copy down some of his very clever phrases or at least roll them around in your head a few times (beware that cannibals don't catch wind of cleverness residing in your brains). All in all, a very thought provoking book and one that I'm so glad I could experience. Many thanks for sharing this with us, perryfran!

I contacted BJLBewdy a couple of days ago, asking for an address. As soon as I get the address, I will send the book off on the next leg of it's journey.

What a great book! This is the first non-Discworld Pratchett that I have read. Lovely plot, setting and great characterisation of Mau and Daphne - maybe the other characters are a little one dimensional. Terry Pratchett [again] succeeded in turning the not-so-ordinary into an extraordinary and eventful story, allowing themes and characters to challenge conventional strongholds, whatever they may be. A book not recommend to be consumed, but savoured like a good wine, until you find yourself on the beach wondering about it all ..........

Classic Terry Pratchett: a great read with layers of enjoyable story, wit, and something to think about. I always get the impression that he must get at least as much fun out of writing his books than we have reading them. Not quite up with the best of Discworld, but I loved it nonetheless. Thanks for hosting this ray, perryfran!

Thank you Stoepbrak! Once again, the mail service proves to be unreliable - the book arrived today. I hadn't even heard of this book before joining BookCrossing, and as I'm participating in other Pratchett rings / rays atm this is the perfect read. I will get this forward in a couple of months, definitely!

I quite enjoyed this story. It was very Pratchett-like without being Discworldian at all, which was very good. Again, the characters thought alot but I was left waiting for even deeper "discussions" on the pages of the book, but maybe this is where the thin line goes between fiction and philosophy. All in all, a very good story and a quick read!
