A Taste for Death

"The bodies were discovered at eight forty-five on the morning of Wednesday 18 September by Miss Emily Wharton, a sixty-five-year-old spinster of the parish of St. Matthew's in Paddington, London, and Darren Wilkes, aged ten, of no particular parish as far as he knew or cared..."
St Matthew's has been the scene of a double murder--or is it murder-suicide? and Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his special team are called in to investigate. Dalgliesh winds his way though a maze of upper-class deceipt and political intrigue to find the truth.
I liked this book better than I thought I might. The author takes great care to give her characters depth and background, almost to a fault. On one hand, at 497 pp, a little firmer hand on the editing wouldn't have hurt; yet at the same time these characterizations are what lifts the story above the run-of-the-mill police procedural.
My book has a different cover than what's pictured.
