FROM THE BLURB:

Montalbano quickly slammed the trunk shut and sat down on top of it. When the beam from Livia's flashlight shone on his face, he automatically smiled.
'What are you smiling about?'
'Me? I'm not smiling.'
'So why are you making that face?'
'What face?'
'What's in the trunk?' Livia asked.
'Nothing. It's empty.'
How could he possibly have told her there was a corpse inside?

In the lazy, slow month of August, Inspector Montalbano and his girlfriend, Livia, prepare for a relaxing holiday in a villa he has found for them. It is, he assures her, far too hot for anything exciting to happen. But when Livia's friends' young son goes missing, a series of events is sparked which will certainly ruin the Chief Inspector's pleasant interlude.

A secret apartment and a grisly find in an old trunk are just the beginning: Montalbano must navigate his way though the case as well as coping with the sweltering heat, the suspicious death of an Arab labourer and the tempting lure of a beautiful girl...

A really good crime novel, probably one of the beter ones I've read. It is a bit of a help if you know Italy and speak Italian, because not all ideas translate fully, no matter how good the translator may be. For example, the whole idea of the dodgy construction work is a uniquely Italian idea. The notes at the end would be helpful. That said, everyone should be fine with it, and it is a very good read. The television adaptions of the books are also first rate by the way, if you ever have the chance.

I don't know Italian and have never been to Italy, maybe that's why I just didn't "get involved" with this book. The story is good, and I can't think of anything specific wrong, but I just didn't "love" it.
