I nabbed this as soon as I saw it on the uncon tables. I've been wanting to read this for a while. I think it actually made it onto my wishlist after I'd read Scarlett Thomas's Popco and she mentioned it as a book she'd read.

Well, I started reading it, but I'm not sure if it's going to be one of those that I will have to read a little at a time, interspersing with other things in between. I'm finding it very, very dry, and so far it doesn't seem to have told me anything that I didn't already know. Like - big corporations spend a lot on advertising and they really want consumers to buy their products. Gosh, really? Perhaps it's because this book came out more than a decade ago and its messages and findings have been discussed exhaustively since then. I will keep trying!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Brought to Monthly BookCrossing meetup at Ye Olde Starre Inne.
I did try to finish it, but I didn't have the time or, to be honest, the inclination. More a reflection on me than on the book.

A bit of a tome so might take a while to be released again. Looks an interesting rant into consumerism and how branding affects spending habits.

Released 5 yrs ago (2/26/2019 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Only got partway through. The text was too small so have got an ebook version instead! Really good and thought-provoking. Just also dense - a lot of complex information. Bringing to the Author-N themed meetup.

A lot more readable than I expected, somehow. Definately helps that Klein is a journalist rather than a theorist- she illustrates her points rather than pontificating about them. A brilliant discussion of how the rise of branding has contributed to more aggressive forms of capitalism, and suggestions about how to combat this. (The latter part is a bit depressing when you reallise things are actually worse now than then!) There's a certain wry self awareness which is more authoritative than radical flag-waving: she talks about the co-option of the campus identity politics she was once heavily involved in, for instance.
