Sonea has a lot to learn - not just magic, but society behaviour and, most importantly, politics. She finds herself the victim of prejudice and plots.

Another fun quick read.

Now, at last a ‘catch’ journal entry for - The Novice (Black Magician Trilogy)
by Trudi Canavan. Sorry for the delay this last week’s been rather hi-jacked by hospital appointments!

Yeah, this book was picked up from the FREE BOOK TABLE at the BookCrossing UK UnConvention, 3-5 July, taking place this last sunny weekend in Edinburgh, the UK’s very own fabulous city of Literature. Here at last it’s previous readers, and or, the bookcrosser who registered it, know EXACTLY where it is!

So what bright spark thought to take a trilogy to the convention, and tied them together thus rendering redundant that well known bookcrossing phrase, “Oh, no, I won’t pick that up. It’s book two or three of a trilogy and I don have the others….” Clearly a bright spark with a car, or roomy luggage and big bulging biceps or their own native bearer! Ah ha, or, a bright spark that lives locally!

Book cover: Imardin is city of dark intrigues and deadly politics, where those who wield magic wield power. Into this established order has blundered a young street-girl with extraordinary magical gifts. Adopted by he Magician’s Guild, her life is changed forever – but got better or for worse.
Sonea knew that she’d face a tough time training within the Magicians’ Guild but she little realised the level of animosity she would face from her fellow novices. The sons and daughters of the most powerful families in the realm, her classmates seem determined to see her fail – at whatever cost. But in accepting the protection of the Guild’s high lord, Sonea may have embraced a far bleaker fate. For high Lord Akkarin harbours a secret that is far darker than his magician’s robes.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if may this be a novel you would really identify with if you were faced with the horrors of rubbing along with bullying monsters at school? This intriguingly gives little depth of understanding to such a situation but does offer a great boost of positive affirmation as Sonea finds ingenious ways of coping and once again her true friends make themselves conspicuous by their care. The second in a trilogy this nips along with more bite than the first and finally I care about Sonea, the magicy bits are exciting fun too.
